City Characteristics

  • Located in a large area adjacent to the Greater Taipei Area located in the northwestern part of Taiwan
  • Stretches from the northwest to the southeast direction, with the southeastern area being a hilly area located 300m above sea or higher
  • Adjacent to New Taipei City to the north, Hsinchu County to the south, and Yilan County to the east

History

  • Taoyuan used to be inhabited by the Taiwanese plains indigenous peoples and was called Homojang at the time.
  • The Hakkas relocated to the area and planted peach trees around their settlement area, which was the reason the region came to be called Dojawon. Under the administrative division system in the Ching dynasty, it was called Doganbo.
  • The opening of Gwiryunsando (present-day Seongdo Line 1) connecting to Taipei in 1733 and a road to Chungli in the following year led to the increased migration of the Han people. Migration was also encouraged during the Japanese colonial period, and Taoyuan prospered as the center of the region.
  • Taoyuan was promoted to the status of special municipality on December 25, 2014
